We have entirely new standards for english language arts. No one has tested their implementation yet. You will not be teaching the way you learned. Goals: present a birds-eye view of the real shifts required in the standards, begin to consider the use of instructional time. On-time mastery of foundational reading and writing skills: children need to be fast readers (even though it is not the goal) Knowledge and vocabulary building every day: oral language they can connect words they know with the actual word, and what it looks like. Early and constant exposure to information texts of all types: leads to children writing what they know about. *** foundation skill (reading and writing) are the easiest skills to fix through early intervention. We want to teach children concepts about things round the world so when they start to read, they can connect it to something. Different states had different standards they wanted to fix this.
