Just because you have strong religious beliefs, does not mean you can just avoid laws. Flag is a symbol of our unity and constitution. 8-1 majority rule (overruled by next case) upheld the mandatory flag salute. Supreme court says if a state wants to have a mandatory statement that they must say the pledge, then they can. Not allowed to put anything above god. To them the flag and the pledge is kind of a ritualistic bowing down. Nobody disputes their beliefs even if they are extreme. State is not able to force you to say something. Individuals should have a direct relationship with god. Requires towns of a certain size to set up a primary school to teach basic literacy so that everyone can learn to be literate so they could read the bible in english. 14th amendment- deprived them of property/property rights.
