Provide instruction in the before, during, after framework. Provide an organizational system that can help readers remember important information in text. Present a simple sentence form the text and guide students in adding to it by attaching words, phrases, and clauses, to make the syntax more complex. Present 2 or 3 short sentences and lead students in combining them into a single sentence with a more complex syntax. Sentence combining provides an excellent opportunity to prompt the use of connecting words, such as because, and, or but.
