Document Summary
Oral vocabulary at the end of first grade is a significant predictor of comprehension 10 years later. Having a bigger vocab makes you a better reader. Being a better reader makes it possible for you to read more. Reading more gives you a bigger vocabulary. Initially (naturally) through exposure - listening and speaking. Then, when reading begins, students begin learning from the text. We see it or hear it again. We think about it and what it means. We ask someone or look it up. May take as many as 14 meaningful encounters to truly learn a new word. Continue acquiring broad vocabulary - general and technical. Use word knowledge to read and write. Tier 2 - high-frequency words for mature language users, important to academic success. Tier 1 - most-basic words, rarely requiring instruction in school. We can define it in terms that the students know. The students are likely to find the word useful or interesting.
