Wegner"s continental drift: explain who alfred wegener was, and identify the theory presented in his book, Alfred wegener was the scientist who proposed the continental drift. Wegner postulated a massive supercontinent, which he called pangaea this broke apart into several large sections that have cont. to move away from 1 another to this day: explain wegener"s evidence for continental drift. He found continental margins of subequatorial portions of africa and south america fit together w/ jigsaw-puzzle-like precision. He also determined that petrologic (rock) records on both sides of. Atlantic show many distributions that would be cont if ocean did not intervene. When continents are placed back in their pangaean configuration, mountain belts in scandinavia and british isles match up w/ appalachian. Supporting evidence came from paleontology: fossils of some dinosaur and other reptile species: explain the response of most scientists of the time to wegener"s 1915 book, and summarize their justifications. General response to wegner"s hypothesis was disbelief.
