Consisted of computer routines that a skilled programmer could use to perform geographic/geostatistical computations -> interpolations. Still required significant programming skill, command lines, software packages. Customization capability (allow specific purpose applications to be created from generic toolboxes) Integrate high level languages to create new functionality (object oriented) Easy to use menu-driven interface and customization capability. Sharing data and ui/ux is a low priority. Several projects in the same department are amalgamated. Think red cross, us gov, ,state gis offices. Data models defines how the real world is represented in a gis. Software data model defines how the dif tools are grouped together, how they can be used, and how they interact with data. Our interaction is limited to turning functions on and off. Customization is the process of modifying gis. Turning menu items on and off -> writing custom backend code and your.
