HDFS220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Operant Conditioning, 18 Months, Motor Action F.C.
Document Summary
Jean piaget"s cognitive development theory: basic principles: When she sees a cat, she calls it a dog. Identified 4 stages of cognitive development: sensorimotor: birth through 24 months, preoperational: ages 2-7, concrete operational: ages 7-12, formal operational: adolescence through adulthood. Sensorimotor stage: infants organize and understand the world using their senses and actions. They think with eyes, ears, hands, noses, etc: little emphasis on internal mental processes. They find this soothing, so continue to do it. Once thumb falls out, have to repeat the action that got it in their mouths the first time. Eventually, start putting thumb in mouth intentionally: these circular reactions become motor schemas, use motor scheme above to put other things in their mouth to try to understand them. From reflexes to goal-directed activity: between 8 and 12 months old, babies combine motor schemas to accomplish goals and solve problems, no longer repeating behaviors simply for pleasure.
