Categorizing and strategizing people"s worth because of their race. Spurred by fundamental denial of humanity of imbued by being enslaved. Therefore, black people were seen as less than people. They were only important because of what they could do. Enslaved people were property, commodity, not human. Black body was of value for labor, tool for owner to have more money. Most of enslaved in the south could not legally marry until after emancipation in. In north, ny, pa, ma, slavery was over, so free slaves could marry. But that does not mean people respected the institution of marriage for blacks. Enslaved african americans entered into relationships that they would consider marriages. In the absence of formal/legal marriages rite, enslaved blacks jumped the broom . Swept away past and negativity, then jumped over to show unity. Unreliableness of stability and protection- some of the us"s original at risk families. Some enslaved people lived in nuclear families.
