Document Summary

Set sail from lisbon in 1497 and went around the southern tip of africa. After about 10 months of sailing he landed in calicut, india. His discovery opens the way for portuguese expansion around the indian ocean and into the south china sea. Part of the attraction was in this area there was a popular trade in spices for the portuguese to get into. Established themselves in trading posts, one of which was the port of melaka. The portuguese seized control of melaka in 1511, established a fortress and a trading center. Vasco de gama"s voyage proved the catalan atlas was not accurate. Not all credited to him and columbus - much smaller discoveries that aren"t credited. Seafaring helped portugal to compensate for being isolated. In the 14th century portuguese sailors discovered a group of islands they called the azores, encouraged more exploration. Sailors were also beginning to work out how wind systems worked in the atlantic ocean.
