17 views6 pages

Document Summary

Arabic came and became dominant language from north africa through byzantine area (not turkey, not iran, gained a persian language) State that emerged was overseen by calif; too big for its own good and broke up. But idea of calif ruling in center stayed until 1258 when monguls came. Before 1258: turks came from central asia (where the originated) and were originally slave soldiers imported by the calif. Came in nomadic waves and overran various dynasties, left great legacy in middle east. Destructive and did not understand fragility of sedentary life which is difficult to rebuild. Came to be ruled by turks until end of 20th century. No nationalism, no ethnic terms, but religious. Lack of primogeniture: idea of monarchy where oldest son takes over. Authority and legitimacy was vested in entire clan, not just ruler (khan), so any male of society could claim leadership.
