British wanted client state, russians did too but not as successful. Amir haibbullah 1901, crowned after his father: tried to modernize/reform the country, mahmud beg tarzi is the ottoturk equivalent. Never became king but he was modernizer who really infused/counseled. Amir habibullah khan invites tarzi back to government so he could imply his ideas about modernization: queen suraya 1899-1968, daughter of tarzi, married next king amanullah 1919-1929. Afghanistan even farther removed from what society was ready for in terms of reforms. Beginning of nationalism, bursts of sentiment against british government (started do invade 1882) 1919 revolution had to do with end of wwi. British refused to allow them to represent themselves at conferences that would determine fate of middle east, particularly paris conference. Sa"d zaghlul became leader of nationalist movement and voiced will of the people: head of wafd (delegation) that went to paris, started negotiations with egyptians a parliamentary system.
