Document Summary
Labor earned them independence -> not dependent on others. Had the potential to be very democratic. By the end of the revolution, it was male heads of household that had authority. Democracy served the interest of the people instead of the elites. Everyone should get something for their government. Among the colonial elites in pennsylvania wanted to stay tied to the british. Ordinary people would want to rule and attack the rights of the elites. Artisans and lower people in pennsylvania organized into groups in order to bring about independence. Did attack standards for voting (property qualifications) Concentrated power in a legislature voted on by all white men aged 21 or older that payed taxes. No example on which to base it. Elect a person that we think will represent our interest. True democracy could not succeed, it will turn into chaos. Only new jersey allowed all property owners to vote, including women.
