Reconstruction- the period when president and congresses working to bring the south back into the. 1865: civil war ends & lincoln dies. Bloodiest war for u. s. --> dying on both sides of conflict: not a lot of medicine. Destruction of property --> especially in south (burned down houses, crops, destroyed bridges/ railroads/ etc. Federal government at the time is small, not much power. Does nothing to free slaves in border states: li(cid:374)(cid:272)ol(cid:374) still (cid:374)eeds support fro(cid:373) people i(cid:374) (cid:271)order states, does(cid:374)"t (cid:449)a(cid:374)t the(cid:373) tur(cid:374)i(cid:374)g to(cid:449)ards. Black soldiers would be accepted into the union army. Important in north"s ability to win the war. Lincoln freeing slaves outside of his jurisdiction: precautionary measure, how will people respond to this, setting a moral tone during civil war --> union soldiers (giving their cause an extra push) Lincoln"s 10% plan: 10% of population of southern states to swear allegiance to united states.
