Had owned few or no slaves; part of southern society prior to civil war, but siding with republicans during reconstruction: carpetbaggers. Northerners who came to south following civil war. Southern democrats wanted to maintain their social, economic, and political power in southern. Attempts by southern dems to take back control of southern society. Divided into 3 tier system: white plantation owners. Owned large amounts of land, grew cash crops (tobacco, rice, indigo, etc. ), owned slaves (which is why they could grow cash crops)
