Document Summary
Not able to be locked: morphemes- un, lock, able. Derivational often changes the word categories but it doesnt need to be derivational if it changed. If a morpheme changes the stem then it is derivational. Lock is a verb, and so are these. Stressed syllable in a word is more prominent than an unstrained one. Stressed syllables are louder, slightly higher in pitch and longer in duration. The syllable that doesn"t carry the primary or secondary stress is called an unstressed syllable. The rate of vocal cords vibration determines the frequency of a speech sound. Pitch is the psychological correlate of fundamental frequency. The higher the frequency, higher the pitch. Speech sounds may be produced with different pitches. Vowels and consonants make up syllables and the pitch on a syllable also determines its meaning along with the segments of the syllable. Change in pitch on syllable means change in word. Ex- yoruba, 3 tones=h, m , l (high, middle, low)
