MAST382 Lecture 18: coasts and estuaries (II)
Document Summary
Sharp boundary in salinity stop mixing in these systems salt wedge estuary. Partially mixed estuary, still observable halocline and pycnocline, easier to move water and materials between 2 and 3. Salinity does not vary with depth, only across the body of water. Low salinity at point 5 due to coriolis effect pulling river water to the right. Coriolis effect only on large enough bodies of water. At primary production maximum, max levels of algae and chlorophyll. Coastlines are shaped by physical forces that move materials. Erosion and material movement form bays, lagoons and estuaries. Estuaries are defined both geologically and by mixing. Bc of mixing, estuaries and coastal oceans are highly productive. Coastal upwelling, thi is analogous to zonation in estuaries fish. Few, mostly small omnivores abundant , mostly small herbivores (anchovy, sardine) plankton. Abundance decreasing seaward, small herbivores progressively replaced by larger carnivores (mackerel, hake)
