MEDT220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Abo Blood Group System, Trace Evidence, Product Rule
Document Summary
If officers are in a position to see suspicious material in plain view. If someone is in danger or needs medical help. If physical evidence could be destroyed, police can collect evidence before a warrant is obtained. Continuity of possession of physical evidence must account for every person who has handled the evidence. All of those who examined evidence might need to testify in court. When not in use, evidence must be locked in an evidence locker. If either one is not met, the evidence isn"t acceptable to be used in court. Important to collect known or reference samples for comparison. Hair, dna, etc. collected from a crime scene are only valuable when compared to victim or suspect. Substrate controls (areas where no evidence is present) are sometimes needed. Biological specimens: head and pubic hairs, blood, stomach contents . A sample becomes physical evidence once it becomes relevant to the case.
