NTDT451 Lecture 14: case study 14 answers
Document Summary
Explain the potential role of diet in the development of nafld. Specifically address the roles of simple sugars, fructose, refined carbohydrates and saturated fat. The pathophysiology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is not completely understood, however complex interactions between macronutrients have been noted. Simple carbohydrates, fructose in particular, is metabolized by the liver and is highly lipogenic (meaning it can synthesize fatty acids from acetyl coa, a process that occurs in the liver cells). An increased consumption of fructose has been associated with increased levels of intrahepatic triglycerides. This accumulation of tg in the liver can lead to enlargement and yellow discoloration (as presented in mr. kim"s case). High fructose corn syrup, a refined carbohydrate, has been shown to have correlation human studies with nafld. Saturated fat is known to be linked with dm and cvd, but also induces hepatocyte apoptosis (the injury/death of liver cells).
