Psychopathology: the scientific study of psychological disorders. Psychological disorder: behavioral, psychological, or biological dysfunctions that are unexpected in their cultural context and associated with present distress and impairment in functioning, or increased risk of suffering, death, pain, or impairment. What is abnormal : the four d"s: deviation, dysfunction, distress, danger. Deviation: behavior that is different, extreme, or unusual (atypical or not culturally expected). Dysfunction: breakdown in cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning: functional interference. Distress: unpleasant and upsetting to the person. May not always affect the individual but can affect those around them. Danger: behavior is consistently careless, hostile, or confused. Person at risk for harm to self and or other. A very brief history of time: supernatural model, biological model (somatogenic), psychological model (psychogenic). Supernatural model: deviance characterized as manifestation of evil. (spirits, demons, possession, treatments: sorcery, exorcism, death, mass hysteria, phases of the moon can cause people to act differently.
