Jane lynch didn"t have an image of anyone else who was like her. Queer representation was forbidden there was a media blackout . Gays and lesbians looked for themselves anywhere drugstore novels for lesbians and physique films for gay men. Fireworks was a gateway film: very similar to a physique film. Censorship cases in the 60s against porn and lesser movies: police raids occurred at gay films and everyone in attendance was arrested. Andy warhol led a queer film revolution: blowjob , beginning of gay production, movie and art. European cinema was where americans turned to for sex, whether they were straight or gay: chantelle ackerman was a belgian filmmaker. Made a movie of a love affair between two women. Stonewall happened in 1969: brought gays into a new way of thinking. They wanted visibility: documentation of these events began. Independent documentaries showed gays: the notion that you can pick up a camera and film your life became popularized.
