• Colonial Boston 1750
o Not a very big place; got around by walking
o Cities were made so that you could easily walk there and
back through the city
o Rich people lived next to poor people
• Horse-powered street car
o First real form of mass transportation
o People start fleeing city and move to outskirts where they
have a little more room
• Boston in 1880
o City expands in particular routes
▪ Where the street cars can go
• Streets were clogged with manure
o Bigger city = more horses = more manure
• Urban leaders worried that growing cities were facing an
insolvable manure problem
• Downtown, walkers needed help finding a clear path across
streets
o Richer people didn’t want manure on their shoes or dress
o People strapped pattens to the bottoms of their shoes to
help elevate them above the muck
• Electrification street cars were made to solve this problem
• Ernest Burgess (1886-1996)
o Burgess’ model

▪ As time goes on, cities begin to change
▪ Urban space has become specialized
