STAT200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Statistical Inference, Descriptive Statistics, Statistic
Document Summary
Help people make decisions, look at intormation, and make inferences about a larger collection of people or items. Procedures for analyzing data together with rules of inference are central topics in the study of statistics. Definition: statistics is the study of how to collect, analyze, organize, and interpret numerical information from data: statistics is both the science of uncertainty and the technology of extracting information from data. Individuals are the people or objects included in the study. A variable is a characteristic of the individual to be observed/measured: variables can be quantitative or qualitative. Quantitative variable: a variable that has a numerical measurement or value for which operations such as addition or averaging make sense. Qualitative variable: describes an individual by placing the individual into a category or group (such as male or female) also referred to as categorical variables.
