Definition: the propagation and rearing of aquatic organisms in controlled or selected environments for any commercial, recreational, or public purpose. This includes the production of: freshwater species; brackish water species; seawater species (marine or mariculture); plant species. Until recently, aquaculture was considered a subsistence form of food production. Aquaculture most efficient in converting feed to high protein food; encouraged and supported by world organizations; a way to provide high protein diets to populations whose diets were deficient in animal protein. Today, aquaculture is practiced the most in asia compared to the rest of the world. Cultured fish utilize resources not used for other forms of agriculture. Most efficient use of food (fish convert food to body tissues more efficiently) Fish are more efficient in converting energy to gain. Maintenance requirements are the big difference between homeotherms and poilkiotherms. Can use land not suitable for other farming. Aquaculture water can be used for irrigation of land crops.
