ANT 2301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Foreskin, Orgasm, Seminiferous Tubule
Document Summary
Learn external structures of the penis diagram. Scrotum: hangs loosely at the root of penis; holds two testicles. Keeps temperature at 93 degrees to protect testis. Testis are gonads, organs that produce gametes. Male gametes (reproductive cells) are called sperm. Sperm is produced and stored in the seminiferous tubules. Immature sperm migrates to epididymis (10-14 days for sperm to mature here) Seminal vesicles- 2 structures that contribute to 70% of semen fluid. Cowper"s (bulbourethral) glands: 2 pear sized structures that secrete an alkaline fluid to clean the urethra prior to orgasm. Prostate glands: secretes fluid that neutralizes vaginal acidity. Spinal reflex in response to any stimulation perceived as sexual. Nerve fibers swell in arteries of penis, allowing blood to flood spongy bodies. Penis returns to flaccid state when arteries constrict and pressure on veins is relaxed. Practiced in egyptian times as well as modern times. 53% reduced risk of hiv in circumcised men.
