Document Summary

Anthropology is the study of humankind in all times and places. Biological (physical) anthropology- concerned with the biological and behavioral aspects of human beings, their related non-human primates and their extinct hominin ancestors. Archeology- the study of the ancient and recent human past through material remains. Cultural anthropology- the branch of anthropology dealing with the origins, history, and development of human culture. Interviews, international commerce, performance and ideology, and international relations. Focused on cultural relativism (belief that we should look at other cultures through their perspective rather than our own) and emphasized fieldwork and use of scientific methodology. Ethnography- the study and systematic recording of people and their culture. A study of a particular setting, using participant observation/ an account of such study. Cultural relativity- used as a response to unilineal evolution; race and/or language does not predetermine culture. Helps to cut back on ethnocentrism and maintain an objective view when understanding culture.
