Anthropology= the study of man : physical/biological anthropology- fossils and morphology, cultural anthropology- behaviors and social organization, archaeology- structures and material evidence of culture, linguistic anthropology- language, origin, and variations. Physical/biological anthropology: includes studying human evolution, migrations, and race, several generations of the leakey family have spent decades in africa studying human fossils. Humans and african great apes (leaves out orangutan: elongated skulls, enlarged brow ridges, shortened canines, shape of premaxilla, fusion of wrist bones, enlarged ovaries and mammary glands, changes in muscle anatomy, reduced hairiness. Out of africa hypothesis: homo sapiens originated in africa and then migrated to asia, europe, australia, and the americas, oldest known homo sapiens fossils, 195,000 ya in ethiopia. Multiregional hypothesis: archaic humans migrated out of africa at different times and settled in different regions, all interbred and gradually evolved into modern humans, not as well supported, no isolation, no speciation.
