In the 400 years of the ottoman empire, the military was a large component of power: in its time, the empire expanded through egypt, hungary, In the 1660"s europe updated its military with new technology: the ottomans did not and fell behind, the military loses balance, structure, organization and declines. The ascent of abdulmecid i: known as the progressive sultan, softly promotes and starts to initiate social and scientific changes, makes room in the empire for religion, science, and learning. Doesn"t go very well, results in the tanzimat. 1830"s tanzimat: makes changes for technology and science, resisted by the ulmea and some of the janissaries, moves very slowly. Over the span of 100 years: leads to the overall decline of the ottoman empire. Land forces on independence: alexandros and demetrios ypsilantes. The first push for independence: theodros kolokotronis, ioannis makrigiannis, georgios karaiskakis, alexandros mavrokodatos.
