Ariadne woke up, saw the ship leaving and cried: dionysus found and married her, she (or the gods) cursed theseus. When aegeus heard that the athenian ship was returning, he climbed the highest cliff of athens. Delphic oracle: don"t loosen the bulging mouth of the wineskin until you"ve reached the height of athens, lest you die of grief . Theseus forgot to put up the white sail. Aegeus assumed that his son had died and threw himself into the sea: etiology: the sea bears his name. The ship theseus used on his return to athens was kept in the athenian harbor as a memorial for several centuries. The ship was maintained in a seaworthy state. Any wood that wore out or rotted was replaced. Theseus had a son from his 1st marriage, hippolytus: queen of the amazons. Theseus abandoned his 1st wife to marry phaedra: daughter of minos and pasiphae, sis of ariadne.
