SPC 2608 Lecture 12: How to Get People to Agree with You
How to Get People to Agree with You
• Monroe’s Motivated Sequence – a logically ordered series of steps used to systematically
persuade people to act how you want them to
• Steps in MMS:
o Attention – easy enough, get my attention, by (within reason) whatever means
necessary
o Need – prove (via facts and cited research) there is a real problem that must be
solved
o Satisfaction – you have the answer. Present the audience with a solution
o Visualization – ask your audience to picture themselves fixing the problem,
enjoying the benefits of the solved problem. Also envision what happens if you
DON’T take action
o Action: repeat action/solution, spell out how easily audience can implement this
action and change their lives for the better. Action should be easy, real-world,
physical things audience can reasonably do. Call on audience to actually act
