Topic sentence: a thesis statement for a paragraph that identifies the main idea of the paragraph. Often the first sentence, but not always. General enough to express the paragraph"s overall subject. Yet specific enough so the reader understands the paragraph"s main idea. Can sometimes refer to the topic of the previous paragraph. Topic: tells the reader what you are writing about. Controlling idea (treatment): what you intend to do with your subject. What not to do with topic sentences. If you use one, only use it in support of the topic.
