Most are familiar with private practitioner who practices general dentistry, single person office, or small group practice. Orthodontics - familiar to many young people. Dental public health - not as popular. Usually have aa degrees from community colleges. One 3 year dental program in the country. Specialties vary from 2,3 to as long as 6 years after dental school. In 2004, unprecedented inc. in the number of applications; 42% inc. Education is expensive and it is difficult to increase the size of class. For the last 5 years, graduates have had no difficulty finding positions. Private practice: a contracted employee, associate negotiate contract with guidelines with what cost the associate/senior dentist is responsible for. 90-100k compensation depending on agreement, contract, are paid based salary and bonuses. Specialty practice: owner of a small business. Increase over a longer period of time. Because of investment, income is lower but after 10-15 years income is higher.
