Anesthesiology with dr. caton notes he was in anesthesiology and obstetrics and gynecology but retired for a short amount of time he ran the unit dealing with obstetric anesthesia. Field of work and how it functions in society. Relatively new field of study that began in 1846. Anesthesiology has branched into critical care medicine. Anesthesiology was one of the fields that founded that practice. Example: youngest patient was a premature child and the oldest was over 100 years old (one century of a difference) A patient may not be undergoing surgery for diabetes but during the time, anesthesiologist are managing their care: heart disease, hernia repair. Required medical school if you"re going to become an anesthesiologist. Can restrict to doing just one or focusing on all. Can also do teaching / administrative work. There are some schools that train to do work of nurse-anesthetist from the operating room.
