African music from slaves evolved from musical tradition, just as jazz and blues had before. 1920s: a regionalzied nation, no mass media records run at 78 rpm, 3 minutes to a side. 1930s: am radio becomes dominant mass media the rst long-playing record re introduced 33 1/3 by rca and 45 rpm by columbia. 1940s: nuclear weapons, television, lp records, and in 1949, 45 rpm records. 1950s: tv becomes mainstream,; the space age begins. The music industry becomes a business force with the proliferation of media in the age of baby boomers post-world war. The indie labels (capitalizaed on success of rock n roll in 1950s: sun records, chess records, atlantic records etc . Fine art literature: music classical, opera visual arts painting, scultpure performing arts theater, drama. Little to no academic or artistic training traditional primitive (did not need to be formally taught, anyone could do it)
