MAC 2311 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Free Soil Party

57 views1 pages

Document Summary

Overall, the republican party was not formed entirely on the issue of abolitionism. However, free-soilers insisted on keeping slavery where it already existed in order to prevent further sectional conflict. Abolitionists, on the other hand. wanted to dissolve it completely from the country causing a rift between them. The free soiler s ideas eventually led them to become a part of the republican party. One of the major ideas republicans had was that the union should be preserved. With abolitionism, the union is more likely to fall apart due to an extremely radical protest from the abolitionists to ban slavery. Free soilers had a more moderate view on slavery due to the idea of containing slavery where it was previously before. Abolitionists opposed slavery on moral grounds, making it highly subjective, while free soilers opposed slavery based on political aspects for the sake of the union.
