Organizations similar to states are gangs, ma as, tribes, city-states, empire. Max weber de nes state as monopoly of violence over a given territory. Monopoly of the use of violence: state is ultimate rule maker, if anyone challenges their rules, the state can use force. Sovereignty: state needs to act as primary authority to those who live there, protecting rights and settling domestic disputes. Legitimacy: force doesn"t hold it together, legitimacy does. We recognize the state and its authority because it"s legitimate and has genuine authority. It has a divine right or its rules causes people to follow the state. We pay taxes because it"s just and civilized. Institutionalization- core institutions include the military, police, taxation, courts, (social welfare system). Regime is the rules and norms of politics. Norms and rules: constitution sets out rules (formal), norms are customs and usually not written down (informal) and governs how we behave. We think of fairness and reciprocity as norms.
