39 views3 pages

Document Summary

Phenotypes of interest- violence, aggression, impulsivity, truancy, risk taking. Basic designs used: twin studies, adoption studies, gene x environment interactions. Mz twins share 100% dna, dz share 50. Limitations: mz share common environments more than dz, but other studies show that they do have different environments like dz. 20-25000 genes in human body which code for proteins. Stored in nucleus of every cell other than rbc. Linked to virtually all observable and many unobservable characteristics: unobservable - personality traits. Each person has own unique sequence of dna (except mz twins) Dna: two fibers twisted around, each fiber is polynucleotide. Sequence of nucleotides- base pairs that match up. Base pair ordering is important- small divergences can alter drastically what"s being studied. Genes are made of 1000 or more base pairs. Every person has 2 copies fo most genes: only one allele exists in the population. For a small fraction of genes there are two alleles that exist: these are called polymorphisms.
