The self is a mirco-level concept -- it is all about how an individual develops a sense of self. Compares social interaction in everyday life to a play. Based on age, sex, race, social class, etc. Level of attractiveness very important, especially for women. We try to present ourselves in ways that make us look good. Goffman says main goal is to present identity that help us get favorable outcomes in social situations. Not that we are necessarily being fake- just trying to make sure others understand us (ex: taking a test) Image making- can use physical attributes (clothing, hairstyle, makeup, cosmetic surgery) to present certain self. 30-40% of us adults dislike some aspect of their appearance. Groups we are a part of can influence how we present ourselves. Often a reaction to stereotypes about our group. Acting white can bring certain benefits (esp. economic), but can have social costs.
