Cancer fits with many issues in this course. Different distributions and outcomes by race/class, etc. The way it tends to affect the most gendered body parts (e. g. breast, uterus, prostate) Politics and activism are key in shaping cancer. Cancer (medical term: malignant neoplasm) is a class of diseases in which a group of cells do something they aren"t supposed to do, including Sometimes invade other parts of body (intrusion on and destruction of adjacent tissues) Sometimes metastasize (spread to other locations in the body via lymph or blood) If someone has breast cancer and a tumor is found in their brain, it"s still breast cancer because the cancer originated in the breast. A stage 4 diagnosis means the cancer has metastasized. Most cancers form a tumor but some, like leukemia, do not.
