AFAM 2000H Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Essentialism, Racialization
Document Summary
High and low marriage rates(latinas and african americans) In poor black communities, black women outnumber black men by sizeable margins. The marriage pool has been diminished by america"s prison boom. Women do not want to marry men who have spent time in prison or are unemployed. Some black men prefer to marry non black, and especially white, women. According to us stereotypes, black people, both men and women, are more masculine than white people/ black men are seens as more masculine than white men:they are stereotypically, more aggressive, more violent, larger more sexual. Both asian men and women are seen as smaller, more passive, the women sweeter, the men less virile. These are cultural stereotypes derived from the particular history of the us. Asians were feminized after the completion of the transcontinental railroad. Chinese immigrants who had labored on the railroad now out of work, found niches in feminized occupation n the mostly-lady-free american west.
