ADSC 3300 Lecture 1: ADSC 3300- Lecture 1
Document Summary
Feed costs represents the major cost associated with animal production. What does an animal nutritionist do: formulate diets to meet nutritional requirements of animals, evaluate ingredients to determine the least costly way to meet those requirements. Species: digestive tract, metabolic rate, body temperature. Physiological state: growing vs adult: gestating, lactating, egg producing, exercised vs sedentary, gender, female pigs eat less feed than males and have diff weights of protein and fat production, so they require diff things. Environment: temperature, how much area the animal has in the pen. *canola meal- lower in energy than soybean meal because it"s higher in fiber. *sunflower meal- pretty high lysine, low in energy because it"s higher in fiber. Corn and sbm (48% protein) are the standard for feeding pigs and poultry. Prices are always higher in the southeast for corn and sbm (transportation disadvantage)
