Document Summary

What differences do you expect to observe in abiotic conditions above ground and below ground, between the forest and the gap: abiotic conditions above the ground allow access to more light. Various conditions such as temperature and wind are different. Underground the gaps do not have large root systems which help trees take in more water and nutrients. Different microbial and macroinvertebrates live in gap environments and forest environments. Nutrients are cycled at different intervals and paces but gaps above ground go with a diurnal cycle. It is possible for some organisms to locate food in the gap easier than the forest because in forest it could take longer to locate nutrient sources. Other organisms however are better suited for forest environment because it provides hiding spots and more protections for predator-prey relationships. The nutrient level can either be increased or decreased because of the canopy.
