Much of the world"s biodiversity is found in the economically poorest countries . Therefore, habitat exploitation (e. g. logging, mining, etc. ) is a problem. Encourage biological & cultural diversity by protecting habitat. Share economic benefits with local community: minimize its own impacts. Example: debtor country owes creditor country million, and likely will default on loan. Step #1: funder/donor buys debt from creditor country at a discount (at least the creditor gets something!) Step #2: funder/donor gives debtor country the cancelled debt, and debtor country uses some agreed upon $ amount for conservation project. million of previous debt in africa, s. america and asia put into conservation efforts. Plans to protect habitat and biodiversity must incorporate the entire landscape, including humans; preserves and protected areas cannot be successful if nearby inhabitants are in poverty. Integrated conservation & development projects (icdps) include protection of wildlife and improvement of living standards for locals.
