But, this does not mean Dee abandoned her upbringing, culture, and people. Instead, she
is embracing those attributes in her own way. It may seem different and unfamiliar, but the fact
that she wished to take the heirloom quilt demonstrates her attachment with her past, and thus
her culture.
With numerous doctrines regarding nature versus nurture, it would seem apt to say that
there is really know right or wrong answer. From the story of “Everyday Use” one can conclude
that both aspects are actually required when shaping a person’s behavior, thought process, and
personality.
It may seem that Dee was jaded at times, and that Mama and Maggie were portrayed to
be inferior to Dee, but in the end, Dee still felt a longing and familiarity to her family members
and old home. This goes to show that either nature or nurture can heavily influence a person, but
ultimately, can not dictate a person to the fullest extent; the latter of the two would somehow
influence virtually all decisions and thoughts by a person.
Both history and literature demonstrate the significance of the decisions and choices one
makes throughout one’s life, and that those decisions can be potentially used as metrics to
measure a person’s various aspects of life. But, in the end, one singular action does not define a
man, especially when considering the fact that one makes choices in life, regardless of right or
wrong. Both nature and nurture create a cycle and system for one to navigate their moral
compass.
