FDNS 2050 Lecture Notes - Lecture 33: Performance-Enhancing Substance, Adaptogen, Bee Pollen
Document Summary
Increase cardiac function, blood flow, and oxygen transport. Function as an adaptogen: antistress effects and antifatiguing effects. The underlying mechanism has yet to be determined. Early studies with positive effects used poor experimental designs. Almost universally, studies with proper experimental protocol show no ergogenic effect of any form of ginseng. Several recent major reviews also note there is no convincing evidence that ginseng possesses ergogenic properties. Ginseng products may also suffer from quality control. Research on the ergogenic effect of most herbs is limited or nonexistent. Herbal supplements vary in quality and ingredients; many supplements have multiple ingredients. Current studies and reviews indicate the following herbals have no scientific support as effective ergogenic. Those that are safe, effective, and permissible. Those that may be effective, are safe, and are permissible. Those that should not be used because they are not safe nor are they permissible. Caffeine, carbohydrate (sports bars/gels), creatine, sodium bicarbonate, water.
