Document Summary

By the 1600s & early 1700s there existed a few textile factories in britain, india, & china, and a few iron smelters in europe, but none were of large scale. * before the industrial revolution the scale and number of industries. The steam engine became the driving force of the industrial revolution. * the steam engine was first utilized in the textile (clothing) industry, which dominated the industrial revolution in the first 30-40 years. Its use quickly spread to the steel industry & coal mining, and eventually to other manufacturing activities. The steam engine driven railroad was devolved in the 1820s and the first steam engine ships in the 1810s. * another innovation to help drive the industrial revolution was the use of high-carbon coke made from coal instead of using charcoal made from wood to heat the smelters of the iron/steel industry. High-carbon coke burns hotter and longer than charcoal.
