GEOL 1250 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Geologic Time Scale
Document Summary
There is a period of time that is eroded away. Laws of physics do not change but rates of natural processes may vary. Slow progress of geological and evolutionary processes is perturbed every once in awhile by catastrophic events. These changes cause major redirection of earth history and life. Oldest life (found from fossilized poop) = 3. 8 ga. Oxygen metabolism is much more efficient than anaerobic (all water) This shows that geologic time is far more vast than our lifetimes and geologists have to take into account the entire age of a rock or fossil being dates. Fragments included in a rock must be older than the rock itself.
