Maryland/virginia is the line between family farms (up north), and large plantation crop farms (down south predominantly tobacco farms) Labor switches from indentured servants from england to enslaved africans. Racism is running through the colonies because of slavery. In the south, there"s a much higher wage/wealth gap. The rich in the south are more like english aristocrats. Much more like a caribbean colony than a northern colony. Big money crop in the 18th c. rice. Rice is more labor intensive than tobacco and you can get richer with rice. But you need a lot more lab or/slaves. Consequences of the way s. c. is run : slavery in s. c. is much more brutal than virginia and maryland in order to keep slaves in check, s. c. has a black majority. So many africans on the coast of s. c. and ga, you can keep african traditions more than in virginia and maryland. Gullah = language between english and african languages.
