Society and culture of the middle colonies and the chesapeake. Three features of the middle colonies: ethnic/cultural diversity, religious diversity, and more tolerance/freedom. Was a dutch colony (dutch west england) 18 languages spoken (english, german, french, etc. ) Religious toleration, gender equality-ish, kinder treatment of natives and slaves: origins with the dutch west india company. No elected government -> dutch company ruled over: english takeover (1664) Not a lot of loyalty to new amsterdam. Society didn"t care when it was taken over. Charles ii, who was exiled, was begged to come back and be king. Gives new colony to his brother james(duke of york) Was actually more important at the time: berkeley and carteret = real estate salesman, 17th century style. Was given to john berkeley and george carteret. Started selling the colony: religious tolerance and selling point. In order to attract buyers, they promoted religious tolerance: high immigration, religious freedom.
