Lecture 7: stereotypes of the old south (march 6) Myths about the antebellum (period before civil war) south. Moonlight and magnolias: wealth was founded on the shoulders of slaves. Hierarchy and ideology in the old south. Ideologies: systems of ideas that inform economics, politics, and social regulations. Old south was very hierarchical: white men and elite planters were on top. Ideologies of the time (paternalism and honor culture) were developed to justify slavery. Paternalism: ideology of male slave-owners that they were fathers of their wives, children, slaves, and other dependents (poor whites) Slave owners took better care of their slaves under these ideas, but in reality still enforced things with violence. Christmas time: masters gave slaves time off, also gave gifts. Honor culture: reputation is everything; power & control defines who you are. Duels: had to be of the same social class to accept someone"s duel. Could be used to elevate social status for the lower-class challenger.
