Not all southerners wanted secession, not all northerners were against the south wanting to secede. Sense of community : your friends are going to fight as well. Confederacy only has to not lose as opposed to the union. No parties = personal and factional politics. Tough men who love their independence don"t cooperate. No parties and diminished sense of loyalty makes it hard to form a confederate central government. Have to have central authority to organize but confederates don"t want to listen. Creates lots of animosity > must have unity to win the war. Money comes from cotton but north blockade makes it impossible to trade. Print money (south has no national currency) > huge spike in inflation (--) By the times its all over, bureaucracy rises in va. Govt take what it needs for the war effort. 90% of men are at war, women and kids run the farms. Starvation and riots women lead bread riots to feed kids.
